Elena Baltacha produced a big upset at the Australian Open on Wednesday, knocking out the 30th seed Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine in straight sets. Going into the match, the British number one had risen to a career high ranking of 83 in the world, 51 places below Bondarenko.

Baltacha will now face world number two and second seed, Dinara Safina of Russia in the third round. Safina reached the final at Melbourne Park last year, losing to Serena Williams.

Katie O'Brien was unable to join Baltacha in the next round, bowing out to the eighth seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. O'Brien was defeated in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. On her twitter page, she remarked, ''a few too many errors from me today, but a good tournament''.
