British number one Elena Baltacha defeated fellow Briton Naomi Cavaday in the first round of the Aegon Trophy on Wednesday.

Baltacha, the world number 62, beat British number four Cavaday in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at the 50,000 dollar ITF tournament.

Baltacha will now face another British player, Anna Fitzpatrick in round two. Fitzpatrick, who was granted a wild card into the event, beat qualifier Jade Windley in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

Fitzpatrick has been ranked as high as 318 in the world in 2008, but suffered a stress fracture to her left foot in August of the same year, which kept her out of action for the rest of the season. Her ranking currently stands at 716.

Third seed Katie O'Brien won her first round match, defeating Austrian Nikola Hofmanova in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Seventh seed Anne Keothavong also went through to the next round, with victory over Valeria Savinykh of Russia, 6-4, 7-6(2).
