British number one Elena Baltacha moved into the second round of the Istanbul Cup on Tuesday, with a straight sets victory over Cagla Buyukakcay of Turkey.
Buyukakcay, who was given a wild card into the tournament, is ranked 137 places below the world number 59 at 196. Baltacha, 26, will now play top seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy in the second round.
Schiavone defeated Britain's Anne Keothavong, in a match spread over two days, due to rain. The world number eight won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Keothavong is currently ranked 143 places below the Italian at 151.
There was better news for the British number three in the Doubles, where she and partner Petra Martic (Croatia), defeated fourth seeds Sorana Cirstea (Romania) and Marina Erakovic (New Zealand), 6-1, 7-6(6).
They will now play Alexandra Panova (Russia) and Tatiana Poutchek (Belarus) in the quarter-finals.
