Bogdanovic defeats second seed

Alex Bogdanovic knocked out the second seed, Rajeev Ram of the USA in the first round of the Aegon Trophy in Nottingham on Thursday.
The British number two lost the first set on a tie-break, by seven points to four, but won the remaining two sets, 6-4, 7-5, to take the victory against the world number 89. Bogdanovic will now face Japanese player Go Soeda in round two.
James Ward came through an all-British encounter with Josh Goodall at the grass court Challenger tournament. Ward booked his place in the next round with a straight sets win, 6-4, 6-4.
Another British player, Alexander Ward, produced a shock result at the Nottingham Tennis Centre, when he defeated American Ryler DeHeart in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.
Ward, who qualified for the event, beat a player ranked 437 places above him at 176 in the world. He will now play fourth seed Taylor Dent in the next round.
Alexander Slabinsky and Marcus Willis lost their first round matches on Thursday. Slabinsky was beaten by Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, and Willis bowed out to the seventh seed, Marsel Ilhan of Turkey, 6-1, 7-6(3).
In the women's ITF tournament, held at the same venue, top seed Elena Baltacha beat fellow Briton Anna Fitzpatrick in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Seventh seed Anne Keothavong also faced a British player in the last 16, Naomi Broady. Keothavong advanced to the next round with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Third seed Katie O'Brien was unable to join Baltacha and Keothavong in the quarter-finals, losing to American Carly Gullickson, 7-6(3), 6-2.
