Curtis through to quarter-finals

Second seed Jade Curtis is through to the quarter-finals of The Caversham International ITF event in Jersey, Channel Islands. The nineteen year old from Cornwall beat British player Michaela Ince in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. In the next round, Curtis will play seventh seed Kiki Bertens of The Netherlands.
There wasn't such good news for the remaining three British players involved in last 16 matches. Elizabeth Thomas was defeated by the top seed Stephanie Vongsouthi of France. Vongsouthi, ranked 491 places above Thomas at 233, took the victory in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(8).
Sisters Jennifer and Jessica Ren from Sheffield lost their respective Singles matches. Jennifer bowed out to third seed Kinnie Laisne of France, 6-3, 6-4, and Jessica was beaten by Veronika Kolarova of the Czech Republic, 7-6(4), 6-4.
In the men's Challenger tournament, held at the same venue, Dan Evans and Daniel Smethurst both lost in the last 16. Evans was defeated by fourth seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Smethurst, who was given a wild card into this event, was beaten by Uladzimir Ignatik of Belarus, 7-6(3), 6-4.
