Saturday, 20 February 2010
Anne Keothavong's run at the Cellular South Cup ended with a defeat to Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson at the semifinal stage.
Arvidsson, who qualified for this event, won in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The Swede currently has a ranking of 102, but has been ranked as high as 29, in May, 2006. She has won one WTA Tour title, at this event, in 2006.
Keothavong, from Hackney, London, has been competing in her second ranking tournament since returning from a serious knee injury that kept her out of action for six months.
The British number three has a current world ranking of 121, but was able to compete in this tour event because she has a protected ranking, due to her six month absence.
Keothavong had a ranking of 54 at the time of her injury. Protected rankings can be applied for if a player is injured for a minimum of six months.
The average ranking of the player for the first three months of their injury is used to determine this ranking.
Arvidsson will now play the top seed, Maria Sharapova in the final. Sharapova defeated the fith seed, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in her semifinal match.
