British number two Anne Keothavong lost her first round match at the French Open to fourteenth seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy on Sunday.

Keothavong was defeated in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in one hour and four minutes, on Court 1.

Referring to her first round loss to the then world number one Dinara Safina at last year's tournament, Keothavong remarked on her Twitter page: "Flavia was too good today. On the bright side, it's four more games than last year at least."

Keothavong will now prepare for the Aegon Classic tournament in Birmingham in two weeks time.

Andy Murray and Elena Baltacha will both play their first round matches on Monday. Murray's match against Frenchman Richard Gasquet is the third match scheduled on Court Suzanne Lenglen, and Baltacha will play the eighth seed Agnieszka Radwanska on Court 3.

Katie O'Brien will face American Jill Craybas on Tuesday.
