Murray defeats Nieminen in straight sets
Thursday, 24 June 2010
Andy Murray moved into the third round of Wimbledon on Thursday, with victory over Finlander Jarkko Nieminen.
Murray won in straight sets on centre court, in one hour, 42 minutes. The fourth seed, and world number four, is ranked 63 places above Nieminen, a former top twenty player.
The match was watched from the Royal Box by Her Majesty The Queen, who was visiting Wimbledon for the first time in 33 years. Her last visit was in the year of Virginia Wade's famous victory, 1977.
Murray will now play the 26th seed Gilles Simon of France in the third round on Saturday. Simon had a walkover in the second round, after his opponent withdrew from the tournament before the match with a shoulder injury.
Murray's brother Jamie, and partner, Jonathan Marray, were invoved in a marathon five set encounter with the top seeds, Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia). The British pair were finally defeated, 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-6(6), 6-7(2), 15-13.
