Robson and Cavaday through to second round

Laura Robson and Naomi Cavaday have reached the second round of qualifying for the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Robson defeated Australian Sophie Ferguson in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The British player was given a wild card into qualifying, and going into the match, was ranked 258 places below Ferguson at 406. Robson's second round opponent will be 18th seed Michaella Krajicek of The Netherlands.

British number five Naomi Cavaday overcame Russian Alexandra Panova in three sets, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3. Her next opponent will be the top seed, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.

Melanie South was unable to join Robson and Cavaday in the second round. The British number four bowed out to American Shenay Perry in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

In the second round of qualifying in the men's competition, there was disappointment for Alex Bogdanovic and James Ward. Bogdanovic, the British number two, lost out to the 24th seed Marsel Ilhan of Turkey in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Ward was defeated by the ninth seed Illya Marchenko of the Ukraine. Marchenko won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Dan Evans has yet to play his second round match against fourth seed Santiago Ventura of Spain.
