Watson wins Wrexham title

Sunday, 25 July 2010

Heather Watson has won the 25,000 dollar Aegon Pro-Series tournament in Wrexham. The fourth seed defeated top seed Sania Mirza of India in Sunday's final.

Watson, who trains at the Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida, went into the match ranked 121 places below her opponent at 252.

However, it was the British number seven who took the victory in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. The eighteen year old is in good form, not dropping a set all week at the hard court event. This win is the second ITF title of her career so far.

Mirza, 23, slipped out of the top one hundred in June, for the first time in five years. She reached a career high ranking of number 27, in August, 2007.

Watson should now expect to climb further inside the world's top 200 when the new WTA rankings are announced on Monday.
